This is especially applicable with the recent news from Capital One that you’ll soon be able transfer your miles to Aeroplan at a 2:1.5 ratio. New technologies, practices, and vendors are emerging to help airlines distribute their airfares. The new landscape is complex. But Air Canada’s latest effort reveals at least one part of the emerging picture. The airline industry has talked a lot about how it can use new distribution capabilities to embrace novel ways of retailing airfares to corporate and leisure travelers. But airlines and travel agencies have only begun to process transactions via the new ways. The shape of the future is unclear. For a glimpse at what may come, look to Air Canada, which this week processed its first transaction via a new platform called NDC Exchange. Air Canada’s Dreamliner is heading to Hong Kong

Air Canada new 2017 livery

ravellers flying with Air Canada between Vancouver and Hong Kong will be able to experience the airline’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft throughout the winter season as the aircraft is set to take over the route from the current 777-300ER.

The Dreamliner will fly the daily route from October 29, 2018 until March 30, 2019.

The change of aircraft will mean a significant drop in overall capacity on the 13-hour flight. Air Canada’s 777-300ERs are configured in two variants, each with more than 400 seats, while the Dreamliner has just 298 seats overall.

Fortunately for premium passengers, this drop is largely in the economy class cabin with just a slight decrease in the premium cabins. The Dreamliner has 30 seats in business class compared with 28 or 40 on the 777-300ER, depending on the configuration, and 21 seats in premium economy versus 24.

Air Canada Customers Can Now Ask Alexa for Helpful Travel Information

MONTREAL, Nov. 15, 2017 /CNW Telbec/ – Air Canada is offering customers additional convenience by becoming the first Canadian airline to develop a skill for Amazon’s popular voice service, Alexa. Devices with Alexa will use machine learning and artificial intelligence to respond to spoken questions about such things as fare quotes and the status of Air Canada flights.

“Advances in innovative and new technologies like Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing have great promise to deliver more convenience for our customers,” said Mark Nasr, Vice President of Loyalty and eCommerce at Air Canada. “We’re thrilled to be working with artificial intelligence start-up RozieAI to launch this capability so that customers across Canada can access AC services quickly and simply, using their voice.”

Simply by asking, Air Canada customers will be able to obtain useful travel information from their devices with Alexa. The skill developed by Air Canada will initially enable Alexa to tell customers the status of their flight, provide fare quotes, and which baggage carousel to go to pick up baggage after a flight, with further topics to be added in the future. Additionally, Alexa will provide general answers about Air Canada’s mobile app, required travel documents, TSA precheck availability and certain ticket policies.
